More RARE Warhol

The Danziger Gallery on 24th st has a small but powerful show on right now, consisting of polaroid photos taken of famous athletic champions.  The shots, like other Warhol snaps, were not originally intended as works in themselves, but as the basis for his iconic silk screen paintings.  Warhol's polaroids have gained respect and appreciation over the years, and have allowed us to peek into his creative process.

The athlete portraits were commissioned  by Richard Weisman in 1977.  He chose the athletes that would participate in series.  In case you didn't recognize them... Muhammad Ali, Dorothy Hamill, Pele, Rod Gilbert, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (my personal favorite of the series), Chris Evert, and dear old John McEnroe (posed with then wife Tatum O'Neil) are among the champs featured.
